BACKGROUND

This project was for a client in the ethical investment app space. The goal was to produce a piece that ranked for a high-intent beginner investing keyword while staying entirely within a brand voice that explicitly avoided the language, structure, and framing that most personal finance SEO content defaults to.

I identified six specific points of tension between SEO best practice and the brand's TOV requirements, then documented the resolution for each one directly in the brief so the writer had a single authoritative source rather than having to navigate between competing instructions. The resolutions included replacing a banned jargon term with a semantic description that preserved the keyword signal, deliberately opting out of the numbered listicle format that dominated the SERP as a differentiation play, and approving a specific meta description wording that had been reviewed against both SEO and TOV requirements and was marked as not to be edited.

The result was a brief that treated SEO and brand voice not as opposing forces but as constraints to be reconciled deliberately, with the central argument that a piece that genuinely sounds like the brand will outperform a generic finance article on dwell time, scroll depth, and engagement, all of which Google measures.
